BOARD ADVANCES TRIP CHOICES FOR 2011 Do you like to plan ahead? If so, you’ll be delighted to learn that at its April 24 meeting and retreat Walkabout’s board selected trips for 2011 to be offered to its supporters. At least four trips will be led by Dan Haslam, and include a weeklong trip to Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, which can be combined with another weeklong trip to Portland and Seattle. These trips will likely occur in the early summer and will piggyback with one another. Another summer trip will be an August reprise to Poland Spring, Maine, for a week at “summer camp,” a stay at a resort which includes two buffet meals each day and happy hour and entertainment at night. There are day excursions to Portland, the 24/7 Eddie Bauer factory outlet, a nature preserve and the last living Shaker village in Americal, population one. A spring trip (late April or early May) called “Above Albuquerque,” features a week’s visit to Albuquerque and the Sandia Mountains and then north to capital Santa Fe and Taos. A fifth possible trip, to occur in the fall, will be to Nashville, the Grand Ol’ Opry and a visit to the dry Jack Daniels Distillery. Rita Balliot will lead shorter trips to Santa Barbara in May 2011 and to Wonder Valley during Thanksgiving week. Interest lists for the above trips are now maintained. You may add your name to the interest list and receive priority for acceptance on the trip. Deposits will also be accepted for each trip once further details are known (price, timing, etc.), but once placed, you may not withdraw your deposit without approval from the trip leader.

Albuquerque Trip Walkabout International’s first major travel experience for 2011 with trip leader Dan Haslam will delight walkers who revel in Native American culture. The first stop of the week-long trip will be the fly-in to Albuquerque, NM for pick up of our vehicle. We will head northwest out of ABQ on scenic Rte. 550 along the Nacimiento Mountains toward Farmington, NM (near 4 corners). Nearby we’ll visit Aztec Ruins National Monument, a pueblo society of 500 rooms. En route we’ll see the Zia Pueblo and the Angel Peak National Recreation Area for a short nature trail. We’ll also visit the Salmon Ruins near Bloomfield and then head east on Rte. 64 near the top of New Mexico en route to Taos. On this route are the Navajo Lake State Park (NM’s second largest lake), the Taos Indian Reservation, Ski Valley and the convergence of the Rio Grande and Red Rivers at Wild Rivers National Recreation Area, with hiking trails and a scenic byway. After a visit to Taos, we’ll head south toward Santa Fe where there are native American pueblos to explore and the Puye Cliff Dwellings, which reopened last year after a decade of closure. In Santa Fe, we’ll visit the capital, shops, churches and eventually complete our “above Albuquerque” circle in the Queen City, perhaps with enough time to enjoy the 100-mile artist route known as the Turquoise Trail. The great outdoors, scenic views, and ancient cultures, it’s all yours on this wonderful exploration. Call Walkabout (619) 231-7463 to add your name, number and email address to get on the interest list for this trip! Questions? Call Dan, (619) 334-0004.
