Walkabout Wilderness Standard Hike
Wednesday, February 22,  2023

“Desert View Hike”
Desert View Picnic Area; Laguna Mountain Recreation Area
Start time: 9 AM

Today’s hike is 13+ miles with approximately 1400 feet of total elevation gain.

The first half of the hike runs from Desert View to Penny Pines on the PCT, with some of the most beautiful views of the desert available in any of our parks. The second half of the hike runs from Penny Pines to the Big Laguna Trail, passing the (now full) Big Laguna Lake, and finishing on Los Huecos Road with a short connection on S1 back to Desert View. There are some areas of small rubble, and perhaps snow and ice for which poles may be helpful. This is a high elevation hike (6000 ft.).

Make sure that you review our information in the wilderness section of the Walkabout-int.org newsletter.  www.walkabout-int.org/wilderness-hikes/

There is no Mission Valley carpool.

New hikers must have the permission of the leaders to join.

You must be fully COVID vaccinated to come on this hike.

Pack snack, lunch & water. Forecast for Wednesday is as noted above.

Directions: Take I-8 west to S1 (Sunrise Highway) north and go past the 23 mile marker. Pass the Laguna Mountain Lodge, Store, and Visitor Center on your left, and then look for Desert View on the right. If you pass the 24 mile marker, you have gone too far.
