WEDNESDAY WILDERNESS STANDARD HIKE: SEPTEMBER 20, 2023
PIONEER MAIL, CHAMPAGNE PASS, INDIAN CREEK TRAIL LOOP
START TIME: 8:30 FROM PIONEER MAIL
Today’s hike is an 11 mile loop with approximately 1500’ elevation gain. We will start at Pioneer Mail at 8:30 and head north to Champagne Pass where we will take a short rest. We will drop down to cross Indian Creek and then up to meet the Noble Canyon trail which we will follow to Penny Pines and stop for lunch. The last leg is mostly downhill returning to Pioneer Mail.
Weather should be partly cloudy and reaching into the low 70’s. Some rocky, cobbly sections so poles may be useful. Pit bathrooms but no potable water are available at Pioneer Mail.
Directions: Take I-8 east to Sunrise Highway exit. Turn left and drive to Noble Canyon just past milepost 29 on Sunrise Highway. As you pass this milepost slow down as the turnoff into the trailhead is right at a curve and not very visible until you are abreast of it. Adventure Pass or equivalent is required for parking. Plan on a possible 5 to 10 minute delay due to construction on I-8 east of Alpine.
