WEDNESDAY WILDERNESS STNADARD HIKE  -December 21, 2022 8:30 AM

Oakzanita Peak – Cuyamaca Rancho State Park

Miles = 10 ish                                                                              

Elevation gain = +/- 1100 feet ish

Trailhead – Oakzanita Peak TH off Highway 79

Start time – Hike departs at 8:30 a.m.

Pace – 2.5 mph (or as dictated by trail conditions)

We will meet at the Oakzanita TH.  No parking permit should be required.  We will hike up Lower Descanso to the East Mesa Fire Road, then take Oak over to Harvey Moore.  We will hike Harvey up to the Grass cutoff over to East Mesa, then head for Oakzanita Peak for lunch.  We will follow Upper and Lower Descanso back to our vehicles.  This will be a fast-paced hike. 

Be sure to bring at least 2 liters of water and snacks/lunch.  Weather forecast is mostly sunny, with a high near 60.  Wear layers.  It will be chilly (mid 40’s) when we start, but we will warm up with the climb.  The upper section of Harvey is mostly in the sun,  Be prepared for mud.  As always, check the weather forecast the night before the hike. 

Please come vaccinated against everything known and unknown. 

Directions:
Take I-8 East to the CA-79 N/Japatul Valley Road exit. Turn left and follow 79 north (towards Julian). After 2.7 miles, there is a sharp left to stay on 79 – make sure not to miss this turn (follow signs for 79 and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park). Continue on 79 for about 6 more miles. The trail head parking is on the right immediately beyond the large “Cuyamaca Rancho State Park” entrance sign. There are no facilities at the trailhead.  map
